Solving Noise and Vibration Issues for eVOTLS from the Source

The concept of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is transforming into a reality as a wide range of aircraft designs and architectures are being developed for air taxis and drone delivery vehicles. Some of the leading electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) developers are announcing the rollout of their air taxi services as early as 2025, with many competing businesses planning to launch theirs by 2030. The key players in this segment include startups, large aerospace manufacturers, and automotive OEMs.

The challenges in manufacturing eVTOLs pose unique requirements. Leading eVTOL OEMs aspire to volume levels similar to automotive production. However, since this is a passenger carrying aircraft, the quality of the vehicles must comply with stringent aerospace standards.

In the automotive industry, noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) is a key engineering topic in defining the vehicle characteristics that affect the quality of the ride and passenger experience. Designing the NVH characteristic can be a complex process. While noise and vibration can be measured, harshness is a subjective quality that can only be captured by the human experience. NVH is not always about making things quieter. In some cases,

the engineer is asked to change the sound quality, by adding or subtracting particular harmonics, rather than making the vehicle quieter. Interior NVH deals with noise and vibration experienced by the occupants of the cabin, while exterior NVH is largely concerned with the noise radiated by the vehicle and includes drive-by noise testing.

The relevance of NVH concerns also apply to aerospace vehicles—for example, the emerging eVTOLs that are lining up to launch the air taxi services in urban environments. Not only do the noise and vibration levels in an aircraft affect the overall flight experience, but it’s also a highly relevant topic for complying with sound pollution requirements.
