As the effects of global warming become increasingly visible and impactful, global industries have responded with enhanced sustainability initiatives. A vital element of the effort to decrease CO2 emissions is the electrification of transportation. On-demand mobility services, connected and autonomous vehicles, and alternative powertrains have also driven increased interest in electric powered transport. New markets have continued to emerge, while old ones have started to adapt or lose market share.

Widespread adoption of battery-powered and hydrogen-powered electric vehicles (EVs) will likely occur within the next decade. General Motors recently declared that it would end the production of fossil fuel-dependent cars by 2035. The United Kingdom announced in Fall 2020 that it would ban fossil-fuel vehicles starting in 2030. As a result of these sweeping initiatives, automotive manufacturers have begun to present more EV models to begin this shift.

In the future, many automakers will likely manufacture and sell a mixture of EVs, robotics, and urban air mobility (UAM) products, such as flying taxis and delivery drones. Though aerospace companies lag behind automotive companies in deploying electrified products, they are also quietly developing proprietary technologies behind the scenes. Many of their smaller-scale prototypes have yielded promising early results.

Embracing a sustainable future requires more than merely electrifying airplanes and cars. This fundamental shift also requires transforming the large-scale infrastructures associated with the distribution and supply of fuel and power. To reflect their understanding of this need, many traditional oil and gas companies have rebranded as power and energy businesses instead. With this massive effort taking place worldwide, one thing is clear: Many opportunities are on the horizon for innovative companies such as Test Devices and Schenck USA Corp.
